I Protest!!
There's something about the Indian political system and the various collective mental processes of any organisation of power and control in this country, that I will probably never full understand. Its the fact that they always set themselves up for a fall. And then wonder why they fell over. And i dont think that theyr not smart enough. They've shown us in the past that theyr smart people. So what exactly happened...
There's three major protests that are going on in the news of late. The Reservations, the Da vinci code (which has now subsided, thank goodness) and most recently the proposed ban for Aamir Khan's film Fanaa in Gujarat. These three mare mostly unrelated, but there was one factor that bound the way all three turned out. It was the predictability.
What amazes me is the lack of firefighting skills and problem detection skills as well that these people really need.
Everyone knew that the moment somebody utters the word 50% in any sort of future planning, there would be wide protests. It was so on the cards. Similarly, given the kind of history this country has had religiously, you could almost tell that there would be at least one group of people who would not like The DaVinci Code and ask for it to be banned. It seems almost natural that somebody in Gujarat would kick up a storm outside a theatre, when only a month or so ago, Aamir Khan protested for the Narmada Bachao Andolan. The kind of reactions that the common people or the would be voters have shown, was also equally predictable. In the first case, wide spread protests. In the second, moderate half-interested shoutings here and there, and in the third, a rathr polite but firm 'fuck you very much' seems to be the popular choice amongst most people.
Il bet that all three groups who created this situation could have seen this coming though. How could they honestly not have?? The number is 50 percent. You actually went out into the public and announced that 50 percent of other regular students would NOT be getting admission. Great move Sherlock. Even if you were trying to fuck with us, you lay it on too thick.
The small minority Christian groups that were protesting against the Da Vinci Code could have known any form of serious protest in a country so religiously minded, so easily swayed and most importantly, so well read in the book, the Da Vinci Code would have really been redundant. Yet we not only saw strong attempts at protesting, some even included a hunger strike!
Given the current reputation the BJP has, would it not have been wiser for them to say hang on a minute. Lets not jump the gun on this whole Narmada thing just yet. What does Fanaa have to do with anything but the fact that Aamir Khan acts in it. How could this backfire against us. In fact how could this even help us. How do we look like anything other than little children, bitter that we lost something and try and get back at someone.
Im a man who likes to think that theres a silver lining in everything. Call it stupid false hope that I have in this country, but I do believe things can and in time will go right for all of us. What surprised me today when I saw the news and got me thinking the most is that whether or not the government has evolved or the political system has improved, the government or political system certainly would like us to think that they've evolved you know. They'd like for all of us to go beyond the current and long lasting image we all have of them, which is the cliched 'paan chewing corrupt official' even if thats who they really are. So why then go out of their way to ACT like imbeciles. Coz thats worked wonders in the past hasnt it. There was a time when random acts of violence used to erupt in places around this country, as a pastime. Hell, it still happens in most places, but at least now people are starting to think about it. And its possible consequences.
My point here again, whether or not theyv become better or worse over the years is not the question. Its that they behave in a manner which doesnt even make us believe. Its not that they cant lie to us like any other government around this world. Thats what We're used to! Its that they dont even make the effort to try to! Thats what scares me man. I dunno, maybe you only see this in a democratic way of governance. Thats not the point. Maybe I dont have one. Just thought Id share this little thought with you.
In somewhat unrelated news, Ken Lay of Enron ("Kenny boy" to George W. Bush) is hiding and weeping right at this minute inside the courtroom after hearing his guity verdict. Hes afraid to meet the press. I think Im going to watch CNN for a little while now!
Edit: OH MY GOD THEY KILLED KENNY! THOSE BASTARDS!! :)
